The Mets stayed active today.
After they acquired a bunch of p̶l̶a̶y̶e̶r̶s̶ w̶h̶o̶ a̶r̶e̶ p̶a̶s̶t̶ t̶h̶e̶i̶r̶ p̶r̶i̶m̶e̶ depth pieces yesterday, they signed right-handed reliever Jared Hughes today.
Hughes will join their 60 man player pool.
Hughes is an interesting character. He built a pitching mound in his backyard and spent his time in quarantine studying the science of pitching.
The right hander is 35 and has coming off his worst major league season. But, that is relative. He pitched to a 4.04 ERA in 2019 which is not the worst considering the state of the baseballs. Additionally, he limited left handed hitters to a .558 OPS.
Hughes has a 2.88 ERA over nine seasons and is just two years removed from his career best season, 2018 in Cincinnati.
I’m loving the upside here.
In the meantime, let’s laugh at the reaction Hughes’ running elicited from JT Realmuto last year.
