When it rains, it pours.
Earlier, Mickey Callaway announced that Wilmer Font would be the starting pitcher tonight against the Washington Nationals. The Mets have lost five straight games and Patrick Corbin will be on the mound for Washington.
But wait, there’s more!
Seth Lugo, who has been the best Met reliever not named Edwin Diaz, has been placed on the Injured List with shoulder tendinitis. The right-hander has thrown 26 innings this season with a 3.12 ERA, and he’s been downright dominant lately. The Mets have called up Hector Santiago from Triple-A Syracuse.
Lugo talks about his injury here.
The timing could not be worse.
A week after being lit up by the Nationals, Wilmer Font gets the call again. Let’s call a spade a spade. We are going to need the bullpen tonight.
Hey, baseball is weird. Maybe the offense wakes up against Corbin and Scherzer after being dormant in Miami. Maybe Font is effective tonight and in the future.
One thing is for sure. The Mets need to turn things around quickly, and that task just got a whole lot tougher.
