Spring Training Update: March 11, 2019

Oh, we are getting close. Real close.

The regular season is right around the corner, but Spring Training has provided us with plenty to talk about.

Let’s get into it .

ROSTER MOVES

The Mets have sent the following players to Minor League Camp.

  • Chris Flexen
  • Gavin Cecchini
  • Franklin Kilome
  • Drew Gagnon
  • Colton Plaia
  • Patrick Mazeika
  • PJ Conlon
  • Ryder Ryan
  • David Peterson
  • Corey Taylor
  • Stephen Villines
  • Josh Torres
  • Anthony Kay
  • Corey Oswalt
  • Walter Lockett

Also, the Mets reunited with outfielder Carlos Gomez on a minor league deal.

JED LOWRIE

The infielder said that he’s “making good progress” and hopes to resume baseball activity soon. Lowrie has been dealing with a left knee capsule sprain.

No word on what that progress entails.

TODD FRAZIER

Frazier who has been dealing with an oblique injury has started a running program. He’s also taken some ground balls.

He’s further along in his rehab than Jed Lowrie, but I wouldn’t be surprised if both players miss Opening Day.

DREW SMITH

The relief pitcher experienced some elbow soreness and was sent back to New York for evaluation.

Cross your fingers.

TJ RIVERA

The Mets have decided to release TJ Rivera. The team has said they will aid him in recovering from his Tommy John surgery.

A great story. Unfortunately, there isn’t a happy ending. Not with the Mets, anyway.

TOM SEAVER

Tom Seaver’s family released a statement that he has been diagnosed with dementia, and is retiring from public life.

“The family is deeply appreciative of those who have supported Tom throughout his career … and who do so now by honoring his request for privacy.”

YOENIS CÉSPEDES

The outfielder will start a throwing program on Monday, the first step in working towards a return in 2019.
