Jason Vargas has a non-displaced fracture of his non pitching hand.
The normal recovery time for this type of injury is typically 4-6 weeks.
Vargas was struck by a line drive in his glove hand in a minor league game on Friday.
X-rays were negative and he was listed as day to day. The Mets remained confident he would be ready to start the season. So, this is pretty much the natural course of events for an injury to a Mets player.
This hurts.
Vargas was slotted as our number 3 starter behind Noah Syndergaard and Jacob Degrom. Vargas was our only starting pitching acquisition at the Major League level this off-season. Coming off an all star campaign last season with the Royals, he was expected to add some stability to a starting rotation filled with question marks.
GM Sandy Alderson said that Vargas can either “pitch through it or have it surgically repaired.”
My thoughts?
Let’s get the band back together.
Noah. Jake. Matt. Steven. Zack.
Why not? What do we have to lose? This season is clearly one where everything needs to go right. Let’s maximize our upside here. Let’s be blown away by the results or watch it go up in flames.
