This may be the final chapter in the Mets/Céspedes saga.
This afternoon, the team released an alarming statement that Céspedes was missing and they couldn’t locate him. Shortly afterwards, the Mets posted a bizarre statement that they believed he was safe.
Well, now we learn that Céspedes has opted out for the remainder of the 2020 season, citing Covid19 concerns.
Mets sent security to the team hotel today and found that his room was empty. Céspedes was gone with the wind.
After he energized the team in 2015, the Céspedes experiment has gone about as badly as you could imagine.
As this is the last year remaining on the outfielder’s contract, this is likely the end of this story.
We’ll always have the World Series run, but I certainly wish that Céspedes’ time here played out differently.
Céspedes had 5 hits in 31 at-bats this season, hitting 2 home runs, including the game winner on Opening Day.
