A familiar face is now back in the mix.
Juan Lagares, who played with the Mets from 2013 until last year, and who was in the organization since 2006, is back with the team.
Lagares was signed by the Padres this past off-season, but elected free agency last week when his roster status in San Diego started to look like it would be in jeopardy.
Lagares has signed a minor league deal with the Mets, and was spotted in camp today. Here’s a picture taken by Anthony Dicomo, the Mets’ beat writer.
We know what Lagares can do and what he can’t. Obviously, on the can’t list is stay healthy. But, this is a good depth signing.
In other news, the Mets continued to raid the Padres’ scrap heap, by signing Brian Dozier.
It doesn’t look like the second baseman has much left in the tank. But it certainly doesn’t hurt to take a look. Dozier had 5 straight seasons with at least 20 home runs, hitting 42 in 2016.
Two good depth signings here, though I don’t expect much from either player. Furthermore, if we see them in action, things have likely gone very wrong.
UPDATE: The Mets have released Melky Cabrera and Gordon Beckham. The player pool is currently at 57.
