After a heartbreaking loss on Friday, the hope was that the Mets wouldn’t let it linger and lead to a stretch of bad play. Well, they came right out and put up 3 runs in the top of the first inning.
The problem with that is that the Mets would only score 3 more runs and Milwaukee scored 17.
Jason Vargas was awful. Jacob Rhame was bad. AJ Ramos was atrocious for the second day in a row. Chris Flexen was terrible, but had some bad fielding behind him. Jerry Blevins was good. Not exactly a recipe for success.
AJ Ramos is probably hurt. The game just got away from the Mets. These things happen. Sometimes everyone who pitches is just collectively bad and you get blown out. Jason Vargas is to blame. Not making excuses for anyone either. Everyone who stepped on the mound was awful.
But Jason Vargas? Mets immediately put 3 runs up for him. He gave them right back and allowed Milwaukee to tie the game. Brandon Nimmo hit a homerun to give the Mets a 4-3 lead. Vargas gave 2 runs right back.
3 innings pitched. 5 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 5 if you want to take any positive away from this outing. I don’t.
What is going to happen if his spot in the rotation comes up against the Yankees? What if we need to trot this guy out in Wrigley Field? Coors Field against the Rockies? Would you even want to watch these games?
Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo both hit homeruns. That is one positive I will take from this game. Jay Bruce actually had a hit and 2 walks, but doubles turned into triples when Jay Bruce’s plantar fasciitis prevented him from running after balls hit into right field.
I say that to say this. I hated the signing of Jay Bruce this winter. Every day that passes, I’m reminded that he is signed through the 2020 season, and I can’t think of a scenario where Conforto or Nimmo aren’t buried when Cespedes returns.
Jose Reyes walked and had a 2 RBI double. Why was he starting instead of Luis Guillorme and how many more months does that performance buy Jose Reyes. What are we doing? What is goal this season? Whatever the answer is, the inclusion of Jose Reyes on the roster does not make any sense. Oh he made his 4th error yesterday.
What else can you say? Mets will send Zack Wheeler to the mound in the finale looking for a series sweep.
